In short, the cases they investigated were always what people who maybe didn't like the show so much, focused their negativity towards but in reality, the one solid comparison from The Killing and True Detective is really the storyline of the detectives themselves and the journeys they go on together and independently. The final season closed the cliffhanger storyline from S3, and also investigates one last murder case - this time with an excellent guest performance from Joan Allen.

Only a few months later, Netflix announced they were un-canceling the show an unprecedented 2nd time, and giving Sud a short 6-episode deal to give the show a proper finale. The ratings had only briefly bumped back up from S2, and the reviews were unanimously positive - but not enough to warrant a renewal. Well, after he's been locked away for awhile and these murders start up again, that throws all theories into chaos.ĭespite an excellent S3, AMC briefly talked about renewing it once again. The lead detective was a junior investigator at the time of his arrest, and was part of the team that put him away testimony from Saarsgard's very young son left nagging hints that he might have had something to do with other girls' disappearances/deaths as well, but she could never make that connection. Their deaths occur in manners similar to how Saaragard's character's wife died - and eeerily similar to how a string of women died at the same time of his wife's death - and then had stopped at the time of his arrest. Supporting actor Peter Saaragard turns in what I felt at the time was Emmy-worthy work as a man on death row for killing his wife, and the two detectives alternately investigate murders of homeless street girls in Seattle. S3 was much tighter a storyline, and the performances were friggin' amazing. Without any spoilers, S3 ends the investigation they begin S3, so while there is still somewhat of a cliffhanger at the end, it still is a sayisfying enough end to not leave viewers jaded as they felt at the end of S1. Sud, to her credit, lived up to her end of the bargain - but slyly left at least one stone unturned in the S3 finale as a nice F U to AMC in hopes that leaving "something" unfinished would whet fans' appetite's enough to have them demand a 4th season. Sud was all but forced to admit that they indeed would announce who the "killer" was for the new 3rd season by season's end - as AMC learned their lesson with S1, and didn't want the same fiasco. Ultimately though, AMC "un-canceled" the show and gave Sud and her team one more season to prove they could write an investigation arc they could wrap up in one season. AMC ultimately canceled the show anyway, because at the time they still had a decent enough stable of shows to not need The Killing any longer. More specifically,Īfter S2 ended, the ratings had dramatically dropped but thankfully, there were enough critics who stuck around until the end of S2 to give the season the credit it deserved for its quality end to the Rosie story arc.

Those who weren't jaded by not getting the "reveal" at the end of S1, stuck around for the beginning of S2, and many of them jumped ship when the second season was a lot of filler to extend a story arc that - arguably in retrospect - could've been enough material to fill out 1 1/2 seasons, but NOT a full 2 seasons.Īnyway, those that didn't stick it out with this show missed out on some great TV, as the final few episodes of S2 were indeed pretty darn good. But that's wat happened when they drug the investigation into a second season. I can't recall a fanbase - or critics who universally lauded a show for that matter - turn so quickly on a show. The first season received rave reviews, and by all accounts, those watching this unfold in real time every week erroneously believed her case would be solved at the end of S1 - while showrunner Veena Sud erroneously believed ending S1 on a cliffhanger wouldn't put off fans. The Rosie case should've been solved in one season - plain and simple. This only accounts for the story arc for seasons 1 & 2.
